Joy and Endurance When Trials Come Your Way Devotional

Joy and Endurance When Trials Come Your Way

Joy and Endurance When Trials Come Your Way

“…Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” – James 1:1-4

What comes to mind when you think back on your life and those moments that have brought about joy? Your joy moments might include something like riding your bike without training wheels for the first time, making the sports team, passing a difficult test, getting your driver’s license, etc. For me, one memory that sticks out to me was making the football team in junior high.

But you may be asking yourself, how does joy come in the mist of your trials? When we look back at the examples I mentioned, we are merely focused on the result or our joy ending. To understand the joy, we must look at what got us there. Let’s look at the book of James to help us.

The writer of this letter was James, Jesus’ half-brother. The book of James was one of the earliest letters and probably written before A.D. 50. Persecution during this time was at all time high. Many Christians in Jerusalem were forced to scatter. These early believers didn’t have the benefit of established Christian churches like we do today. So, James wrote to them to encourage their faith during their early difficult times. So, what do we learn here? We learn that we are not the first to encounter difficult times or trials. We know that trials are and will be a part of life. We also learn that just like James and many other leaders we see in the bible, God always sends us someone to encourage us.

Now let’s look at what James has to say about your trials or as this translation calls it, “troubles”. First, James doesn’t tell us “if” troubles come your way, but he uses the word “when”. He is making it very clear here that troubles WILL come. We saw the trouble that came for James’ readers during the early church. So, it is no surprise that troubles will come, but there is good news.

The good news is that their can be joy in the mist of your troubles. James goes on to say that we should consider our troubles as an opportunity for great joy. Key word here is “opportunity”. The point here is that we should have a positive outlook when troubles come our way. Because of our troubles we can be confident that joy is not too far away. Take the examples used earlier that reminded us of the joyful moments in our lives. Take the joy you felt when riding your bike without training wheels for the first time. The trouble that came with taking the training wheels off was that we knew learning to ride a bike would bring forth frustration and maybe some pain. Frustration from not being able to get it right the first time and pain from the many times you fell of the bike. This was the trouble or trial in this example. But there was an “opportunity” for joy. After many falls, scrapes, bruises, and frustration you eventually learned how to ride your bike without training wheels.

So, do we stop there? James goes on to teach us that after the troubles and opportunities for joy, then comes endurance or perseverance (also called patience and steadfastness). Times of hardship teach us something about ourselves and our God. They teach us how to grow our endurance and make it through some of the most difficult times in our lives. We learn that God is not trying to shelter us from pain and suffering, but he is trying to mold us to be mature and complete. So, next time trials/troubles come your way remember this:

  1. Trials WILL come
  2. There is an “opportunity” for joy behind the trials
  3. Use the trials to “grow” your endurance or perseverance
  4. Fully grown endurance will make you mature and complete

Reflection Questions:

  1. How have you dealt with trials in your life?
  2. What joy has come from those trials in your life?
  3. How are you better equipped to handle trials in your life moving forward?

Real Love Devotional

Real Love

“We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” (‭1 John‬ ‭3‬:‭16-18‬)

Over the last few months, I have thought and spoken the word “LOVE” thousands of times. On March 8, my wife and I met our firstborn child, Aileigh Elizabeth Grace, and she immediately captured our hearts. It was truly love at first sight. After she was born, Aileigh was taken to the NICU because she weighed four pounds. I felt shock and concern, but above all, I felt love. I had just watched my wife Alecia, labor through the night, seen my daughter take her first breath, and my heart was filled with love.

Fast forward to July 10 when Alecia and I will celebrate our 16 year wedding anniversary. As I thought about exchanging vows on our wedding day, my heart was full of love once again. There are so many ways I express my love for my wife. We place love notes in each others’ lunch bags, hold hands, pray together, hug and kiss one another, share encouraging words and make sacrifices for each other. We want to make sure the other feels loved.

As much as I love my wife and daughter, I know that Jesus loves them more. This passage from 1 John 3 reminds me what real love is – Jesus gave his life for us.

Jesus is our example, and this Scripture directs us to give up our lives, show compassion and act in love. My love for my wife gave me the courage to ask for her hand in marriage. My wife’s love for our daughter gave her the strength to endure childbirth. Jesus’ love for us enabled him to endure the cross. His perfect love teaches me how to love my family, friends and my neighbor.

Loving our neighbors like Jesus loves us is what we do as believers. We want them to experience the real love of Jesus too. Verse 18 challenges us not to just say we love them, but to show we love them through our actions. Jesus demonstrated His love for us, and His love is unconditional without boundaries, full of grace and mercy. We stand in the gap so others will have the opportunity to know this real love that Jesus offers.

How will you show someone you love him or her this week?

Blind Trust Devotional

Blind Trust

You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. ~ 1 Peter 1:8-9

A few years ago, I noticed that the vision in my left eye had become blurry so I shared my concerns with my wife, Alecia. Although I was certain that my 20/20 vision would return, Alecia recommended that I schedule an appointment with her optometrist. During my appointment the optometrist confirmed that my vision wasn’t 20/20 anymore and recommended I that see an ophthalmologist immediately.

That afternoon, I had tests completed and awaited the ophthalmologist’s report. As I waited for the results, several questions ran through my mind. Would I need to have emergency surgery? Could I lose my left eye entirely? Would I regain my eyesight? If my eyesight wasn’t restored, how would I adjust to life without the use of both of my eyes? With each unanswered question, my stress level increased dramatically.

Finally, the ophthalmologist walked into the examination room and discussed his findings. He identified the cause of my vision loss and presented two options to help restore my eyesight. Apparently, my temporary vision loss was stress-induced. The options offered to restore my eyesight included: 1) lessening the amount of stress in my life or 2) proceeding with surgery.

The doctor encouraged me to work on managing my stress, since surgery would only provide a temporary solution and poorly managed stress could cause the condition to reoccur. I scheduled a follow-up appointment and was told that I had two weeks to implement an effective plan to reduce stress or surgery would be necessary. As I worked to implement a plan, I came across 1 Peter 1:8-9. I was challenged to trust God not only with my eternal salvation (and my vision), but with the everyday stress I encounter in life.

As human beings, it is easy to become overwhelmed by life and consumed by stress and this coronavirus pandemic has probably increased our stress\anxiety levels. I know it has for me. The verses in 1 Peter 1:8-9 remind us that we have trusted God with the most important aspect of our lives…our eternal salvation. Since we have entrusted eternity to Christ, why shouldn’t we extend that same “blind trust” to every area of our lives? Even though we have never seen our Lord and Savior we find ourselves loving and trusting Him. Our “blind trust” causes us to rejoice because we know that “blind trust” will ultimately lead us to the sweetest reward ever!

What are you blindly trusting God to do in your life? Do you trust that God will do it?

What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

Don’t Worry & Pray Devotional

Don’t Worry & Pray

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.  – Philippians 4:6-7

Since the birth of my daughter, Aileigh, I have had my share of worrisome moments. Like many new parents, I worried about whether I installed the car seat correctly or if she’d sleep through the night. I began to worry more when she didn’t eat enough or gain as much weight as her pediatrician recommended. When we were referred to a specialty doctor, I worried about the medical testing, procedures and surgeries ahead of us. Ultimately we discovered that my daughter has a rare genetic disorder that will require ongoing medical care. As my child’s medical needs and specialty doctors increased, so did my worry.

Eventually, I sought refuge from worry and opened my Bible to Philippians 4:6-7. As I read verse 6, I was reminded to replace worry with prayer. Although my wife and I prayed for our daughter, worry persisted. I re-read the scripture and recognized that there are two key words in this passage that shouldn’t be forgotten. The key words we should keep at the forefront of our minds are anything and everything. Paul reminds us that we should not worry about anything, but instead we should pray about everything.

After reading these verses I was encouraged and challenged to respond to worry by taking action in prayer. Despite the obstacles we experience in life, God is faithful to listen to our concerns. Instead of worrying, He has encouraged us to pray about EVERYTHING!

During these difficult times of the COVID-19 virus we have naturally had times of worry. We worry of catching the virus, the economy, our loved ones, and those most vulnerable. When worry invades your thoughts, I encourage you to follow the three-step plan demonstrated in Philippians.

1. Tell God what you need
2. Thank Him for what He has done
3. Allow God to guard your heart and mind

Taking the time to tell God my concerns allowed me to consider the many times God has graciously met my needs and the needs of others. As I considered all that He has done, I found myself transitioning from a place of worry to one of prayer and praise. Now, when my wife and I seek medical care for our daughter and anxious thoughts creep into my mind, I follow the three-step plan outlined in scripture. May this be a help for you during these difficult times.

In what areas of your life can you implement this three-step plan to stop worrying and start praying?
